Helpful Hints that we've Learned so far about Trending on Twitter
(Please add any more below that you might know of too )

If you're new to Twitter, first things first, you need to set up a Twitter account ;D

If you have a 'Private' Twitter account, you'll need to change it to 'Public' if you want your Tweets to count towards Trending. (You can always change your account back to Private after the trending events

Most of us have gone, or will be going, to "Twitter Jail"
-This happens when you tweet more than your limit in a day, or in an hour, not sure how they figure out what your limit is, but it's good to have an eXtra Twitter account or two when this happens.
You can tell when you're in "Jail" as a message will come up saying something similar to: "Oops! An Error Has Occurred". Sometimes you can refresh/reboot your page and you'll be able to tweet again. Otherwise, that account is usually "Frozen" for at least an hour, sometimes more.

For fans new to Twitter Trending, one of the easiest ways is help Trend is to search the #hashtag that we're trying to trend
(The search window is on the right-hand side of your Twitter 'Home' page)

For instance, if we're trying to trend the hashtag of: #LegendOfTheSeeker, you'll Search for that, and when the Search Results show up, click on "All" and then just click on that #LegendOfTheSeeker Hashtag, and the tweets related to it should show up

Then, just Retweet the ones you like
(Please only Retweet the ones with either no 'RT' beside them, or only one 'RT' next to them. If there are more 'RTs' than that beside the Tweet, the #Hashtag might get cut off.)

To Retweet another fan's Tweet, please just scroll your mouse over the bottom right hand side of the Tweet you want to Retweet, and the option will appear. Then just click it.

Continue to Retweet/Create your own Tweets as fast as you can, until we are 'Trending', and then Please continue to Retweet/Tweet to keep us 'Trending'

To see if our #Hashtag is Trending, scroll down to the right-hand side of your Twitter 'Home' page, and refresh the 'Worldwide' option, or any other options, to look for our tag


A hashtag is this: # and you place it in front of the word/name that you are trying to trend


Please keep the chosen hashtags uniform/the same to have a better chance of trending

Only One # Hashtag is allowed per tweet (more than one and your tweet won't count towards trending)


Please Do NOT Swear/Curse in your tweets - they will Not count towards trending.

The way trending topics work is for a mass amount of people to tweet the same hash-tag at the same time. If you start doing it earlier than the designated time ... it'll be pointless and it will not make trending topics, which is what we want!


>3. IT ISN'T THE NUMBER OF TWEETS, BUT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE TWEETING.
The more people we have doing this, the more successful it will be!
You might want to force/ask/ even begging your friend, followers, etc to type #saveourseeker ONCE per tweet! (Don't forget to say Thanks when they did )


>4. UNLOCK YOUR ACCOUNT DURING TRENDING!
It will not show up in trending topics if your account is set to private! Just unlock it for the time being and as soon as you are done tweeting for the day/night, you can reset it to private.


>5. ONE HASH-TAG PER TWEET - - PLEASE REMEMBER THIS.
Because that is also spam, and spam is unwanted.
Sadly, you can't put both #saveourseeker and #legendoftheseeker in one tweet because it will NOT BE COUNTED.

Good tweet:
I love #legendoftheseeker so much!


Bad tweet:
I love #legendoftheseeker so much, please #saveourseeker ! --> Will not be considered by Twitter


>6. DO NOT PLACE 'LONE' HASHTAGS
It won't be counted either! Add some sentences/words inside your tweet


Good tweet:
I love #legendoftheseeker more than anything!

Bad tweet:
#saveourseeker <--- Typing only this

**Twitter Trending Helpful Hints from Carmen Sandeeago**

I look from time to time at history of tweets, and we've had some awesome original ones, that if I didn't follow Legend of the Seeker, would definitely get my attention.

Also, the recent ones sent to @theellenshow & Jeanie are great and peak curiosity.
(example: merelyfreshmen@jeannieeeee "Can you tell Ellen we found an outfit for her to wear bit.ly/acyXln " )

However, I find when we tweet celebrities/media in BULK, it just reads as SPAM.
I'm guilty of being lazy and sometimes retweeting, but if there are already 4 names on the tweet mentioned, then it just reads as RT RT RT ___@_____@______@ and they'll automatically ignore it and so we are wasting opportunities.

Let's try to copy/paste the same tweet individually to different media, persons, etc..., but not group them all in one big cluster.

Also, be as original and interesting as possible - "Please Help Us" doesn't really cut it!

Those are my 2 cents. My apologies if I offended anyone.


**Other Trending Tips to Share**

When just trending, and not necessarily asking a question to media, etc, it's best to just have small messages and adding #LegendoftheSeeker to it.

Just keep it moving and keep it new.

Talk about your day or whatever, but don't include Bridget's tweet address because it's spamming her as well. (unless you're asking her a question, then please spare her! lol )

**Followers Lost**

If you notice other fans sadly saying that they are losing followers due to helping with the Trend, please encourage Your Followers, to follow them



New Info from @jonjon
--A simple text message from your cell phone to the twitter access code will post a tweeteroo and COUNT toward trending!! (As long as you HAVE a twitter account linked up to that cell phone - REALLY easy to do in the Twitter settings page.)

--I've noticed that the trending really should start at about 2 minutes before the hour, as for some reason the "trend" is REALLY recognized if it "hits the waves" just before a new hour, or half hour.

(If trenders wanna give this early bit a try, and read this in time, we should give it a go! ;D )

#LegendofTheSeeker was a trend attempted on Saturday, May 15th/2010, but due to a new algorithim by Twitter, even though the tweets seems more than enough, it was an unsuccessful trend.

Seeker fans attempted to change the tag in mid-attempt to #TheTrueSeeker, in order to see if that might change things.

Again, the stats listed it as high, so we're still baffled as to how to trend a topic with the new algorithim.

I posted this over on the Triple Trending Event page but thought it might be useful to re-post here. It was a response to a conversation about Twitter's new filtering rules and spam policy with regards to trending. The "examples" I refer to were from the #TabrettBethell trend sampling I posted over in that forum.

Something else of note from that example is there are no "Retweets". Retweeting is perfectly acceptable is something is good. In fact the new Twitter interface for searching weights tweets by how much they've been Retweeted. A search for "@bridgetregan" a few minutes ago had WrittenByMikeS's latest tweet that mentioned Bridget in it (it had been retweeted 24 times) right at the top of the search results.

From reading through the Twitter policy it seems that they are flagging accounts as "spam". If your account is flagged as a spammer your tweets will show up for you and anybody following you but nobody else, and they will not count towards trending. The only way to resolve this is to not be flagged for spam by their algorithm for a period of time.

An easy way to test if your flagged for spam is to sent a tweet out to a hash tag that isn't very busy then do a search on it to see if your tweet comes up. If it doesn't you're flagged and nothing you tweet will be considered for trending. You'll want to make a new account for that and make sure you don't send "spam" tweets. See the Twitter policy ( help.twitter.com/forums/26257/entries/18311 ) for all the rules.

I highly recommend you get familiar with a link shortening site, I prefer bit.ly myself. There is a toolbar add-on for it that makes generating links and tweets very simple (I use it in both Internet Explorer & Google Chrome). Instructions for setting up and using the Bit.ly bar on the main page.

I try to leave 13 open characters on my tweets so that they can be easily retweeted without losing any content ("RT @kenliska " takes up 13 characters). If somebody does a retweet the default behavior is to add the "RT @name" to the beginning and truncate the tweet down to 140 characters. I often see web links get chopped and unusable when this happens. To avoid this don't end your tweets with a link or make sure there is enough space for the RT tag.

Tweeting Tips

Use a single hash tag to identify the trend, I strongly recommend #LegendoftheSeeker since it's easier to fit in to any tweet than #SaveOurSeeker and it has the most use today. If we use different tags on different tweets it splits our effort.

You can use multiple hash tags in a tweet but it is recommended to keep it under 3. Each tag you use will count towards trending (if your not flagged as a twitter-spammer) but you usually can't get a meaningful message across with multiple tags forced in. I used multiple tags in one example above to help catch the attention of #LegendoftheSeeker and #SwordofTruth fans.

If you include @abcdisney in the tweet it will show up on their feed and they will see it. The more they see the better (as long as they are legit).

If you are sending to a media outlet or organization use full link address. They may not trust the shortened link as it is easier to send spam/viruses through them.

If you want to direct a tweet at an organization or somebody just hop over to Google and type it into google like this example: "Washington Post Twitter" and do a search. If they have a Twitter account it will most likey be the top link, in this case "http://twitter.com/washingtonpost" or "@washingtonpost" in a tweet.

Target your local televsion stations, networks, media outlets. But if you do make sure there is content in the tweet, I recommend the saveourseeker.com/press.html (the .html is required, the page will not load if it is not there) link for them.

Reminds me of a trip I made to Haiti a few years back. A little 3 year old Haitian girl had Mickey as her prized possession. She didn't talk much, but she could say 'Mickey Bear'. She was so adorbs!!
