You're quite a globetroter, Immerrda! I'm slightly jelaous - I never lived too far or too long away from Poland (though at least I lived all over Poland ) Manuela, I actually know a little German! I've been learning it for years, I've even been to a summer school in Bayern once, but I'm afraid the only proper sentence I can put together now is 'Die Familie sitzt in Wohnzimmer.' (and I think I misspelled sitz), and that's only because once my friend made the mistake of saying 'Die Familie sitzt in Lebensraum' and the mental image of a little Nazi family stayed in my head:) oh, and to stay on topic - I currently live in Warsaw, the capitol of Poland. In possibly the worst pun ever, it has been called 'the city that saw war', but apart from bloody and horrific history it's really nice

manuela: Austria, I love that country! I spent one of my best summers in Vienna, it is very nice. My German is very very rusty, but I still understand a bit I live in a town called Havirov (Czech Republic). I´ve never lived anywhere else, not for a longer period of time I´m not complaining, I like traveling, but I prefer to stay close to my family. I moved out of my parents´ house about 16 months ago, but it takes me only about 25 minutes to go see them. ladymajavader: I´ve been to Poland several times, never to Warsaw though :-( I´m sure it´s a lovely city. I should go see it sometime in the future, it´s only a 5 hour train ride

ladymajavader: your sentence is great! But if I would speak only a little German, I think, I would translate it the same way you did. In English it's living-room, so why not "Lebensraum"? Would be logic in my opinion. I know, German is a very difficult language - sometimes. But I also have sentences in English, I always said wrong and after ten times corrected by my teacher, I got it right - somehow *lol*. I also learned a bit Italian and Latin and trust me - its more difficult than German.
gibbynka, you know Vienna??? I think it's a great city and in February I'll moving to Vienna, because I'll attend the university there, to study Film- and Media science. And this at my age *lol*!
But you two are right! If you don't use a language regularly, you forget almost everything. I also had Italian and Latin at school but please, don't ask me something in these languages now, because without dictionary ... it's hopeless! Maybe my trips to London helped a bit in practicing my English skills, and I love to read English books.

gibbynka, I checked Havířov out, and it's right next to Cieszyn! I mean, Těšín I used to go for the film festival in the summer there and cross the border to and fro every day. Such a lovely town! Never heard of Havířov before though, only of Frydek-Mistek, because that name sounded too funny to be true. And if you ever feel the urge to visit Warsaw, let's just say you have guaranteed free accomodation and a very good tour guide manuela, thanks for approving my one good sentence You're absolutely right, if unused language skills atrophy. So forum discussions and English books and tv shows are a must! Also: Film and Media science! That sounds fantastic and enviable, no matter your age. I'd trade in a heartbeat!

I live in Austria - seems like I'm the only German speaking person in here *lol* Wilkommen, manuela! Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch. Ich studierte Deutsch in der Schule und um Universitat vor viele Jahre. Okay, I'm straining my brain! I haven't had the chance to use my German and don't remember most of it. I love Austria! I've been to Salzberg and Vienna and would give anything to go back. My hubby's grandfather came to America just after WWI so hubby is second generation American on his father's side. Welcome to the board! It's wonderful to see people from all over the world getting together to share a common interest. The people here are great and so friendly! Glad you're here!

Near Iowa City, Iowa. But really in the country 20 minutes away. That's right. Pigs, cows, gravel roads. This is my life.
We took German for like a semester in 7th grade. I remember like 5 vocab words. Like blieschtift (definitely spelled wrong). Supposed to be the one that means pencil.

yoyoder I guess, you mean "Bleistift", which is pencil in English. But we also have words in our language, which you are using too, like "Rucksack", "Tannenbaum" or "Kindergarten". And I remember, when I was in London, they are using the word "Bratwurst" too... it's always quite funny, when you are visiting a country with a foreign language and then you find words, which are completly the same...
and right know, I try to spend some money (or a lot of money - depends on what is a lot and what not) for a trip to NZ, in two years. I learned a lot about this country in school and I wrote an essay for my a-levels about it. besides... I want to visit the locations, where Lord of the Rings was shot! *gg*

I live in Southern Germany, near the border to France and Switzerland, so obviously, I speak German, too. ^^ Didn't know so many people on the board once learnt German. I always thought the first foreign language you learn is English, or, if you are a native speaker, French or Spanish. Not German.
